Carbon Copy Cloner... Clone, synchronize, backup. Schedule and forget it. Try it 'til you trust it.

In its simplest form, CCC will clone one hard drive to another, copying every single block or file to create an exact replica of your source hard drive. This is very useful if, for example, your laptop is damaged and you must send it in for repair.

CCC can also be used to perform regular backups of your data. When you select a source disk in CCC, you are presented with the contents of that disk (hidden items too). Simply uncheck the items that you do not want to backup, and CCC will provide ample indication what will and will not be copied. Select a target disk to which you would like to backup, then press the clone button.

The key to a successful backup plan is to actually do the backups regularly. When left to a human, the task often gets tacked on to the end of a very long list of other things to do. When you eventually have a catastrophe, the data is simply gone. You know that feeling -- you just lost six years of family photos. Your kids being born, their first birthdays, their first everything. The answer to this is consistent and regular backups, placed on a schedule and handled automatically by your computer. CCC includes that functionality, and takes it even further.

WHAT'S NEW

• Fixed an issue in which files or folders with special characters (e.g. '[', ']', and '*') could not be excluded in an 'Incremental backup of selected items' backup task.


• Fixed an issue in which CCC would report a generic error rather then indicating that a backup task failed because there was not enough free space on the target to accommodate large files that had been modified since a previous backup.

GlimmerBlocker... The problem with other ad-blockers for Safari is that they are implemented as awful hacks: as an InputManager and/or ApplicationEnhancer. This compromises the stability of Safari and very often create problems when Apple releases a new version of Safari. GlimmerBlocker is implemented as an http proxy, so the stability of Safari isn’t compromised because it doesn’t use any hacks. It is even compatible with all other browsers.

You’ll always be able to upgrade Safari without breaking GlimmerBlocker (or waiting for a new release); and you’ll be able to upgrade GlimmerBlocker without upgrading Safari. This makes it much easier to use the beta versions of Safari and especially the nightly builds of WebKit. Because GlimmerBlocker doesn’t hack Safari, there is a few things it isn’t able to do: adding a block by right-clicking an image, stopping pop-unders, and filtering cookies from 3rd party sites. But you win a lot in stability, and GlimmerBlocker provides much easier methods for adding your own modifications to pages by adding css rules, pieces of Javascript or by transforming the html before Safari receives it. So I’ll hope you’re happy with the tradeoff.

If you can program in Javascript you’ll be able to add your own modification to pages. See the included filters for examples, e.g. adding a download link to YouTube.

WHAT'S NEW

• Blocked images are now transparent instead of light gray checkerboard pattern. The latter can be enabled by filter developers for debugging.
  
• Support for site-wide http proxy. Some companies/ISPs require using an http proxy for external access.

• QuickTime streaming using RTSP-over-HTP now works. Simple download of movies (as Apple use on the trailers site) worked, but RTSP-over-HTTP didn't.
  
• Improved charset detection when modifying html (e.g. adding css.) and it uses the original charset when forwarding html to Safari to avoid charset problem with form submissions.
